Brewery Spotlight: The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Charlotte, NC

On my business trip this past week, I had the wonderful opportunity to sample some local flavors and brews that make up the growing Charlotte beer culture. Just a quick glance from Yelp and Google gave me tons of new information of where I could go to find some of the very best Charlotte had to offer. The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery did not disappoint.

After work, I talked a fellow coworker into joining me. We work in small town on the outskirts of Charlotte, just across the border in South Carolina. With rain pouring down, we made our way to the brewery. We were greeted with a very cool frontage and the smell of pizza.

When we walked in, we were greeted with an old German dining hall experience. Long tables with chairs offered a welcoming and more communal experience. We sat down next to some Norwegians who greeted us with raised glasses and warm smiles. Now my coworker is not a beer drinker, but even he was impressed by the atmosphere and yes, their good brew.

My first beverage was their Dunkel. I love dark beers. Dunkels were the very first beer to undergo Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law) in 1516. Dunkels were the predominant style of beers in Bavaria which really just mean they are the ‘dark beers’ that were available at the time. They have a very smooth and malty flavor.

OMB’s Dunkel met those standards quite well. It had a nice malty aroma, produced a fine silky head, and a finish that wasn’t too bitter. For those who like darker beers will find this beer is a great. I paired this with their Curry Ketchup Sausage and Fries appetizer. The Ketchup was made from Coke, Curry, and Ketchup. It was delicious.

While my friend had to leave, I enjoyed some great conversation from my new foreign friends. I learned a bit of history, and enjoyed some great pizza made fresh. They even add their Copper beer into the dough before they bake it. It tasted fantastic.

If you are in the Charlotte area, be sure to check out this wonderful treasure that is South Charlotte and not too far from the airport. As for myself, I loved the beer, and took home a growler to enjoy at night after a long days work.
