Covenant Classical School

Classical Christian

Classical Christian education is based on what has been called the Trivium. No matter how your child learns, he or she goes through three phases. In grades K-6, students are excellent at memorizing. In grades 7-8, students become more argument-oriented and are ready to be taught logic and critical thinking. In grades 9-12, students continue to mature as independent thinkers and persuasive communicators. To this end, classical education teaches “rhetoric,” the art of speaking, communicating, and writing effectively.

Covenant Classical School integrates

Covenant Classical School integrates subjects like Bible, literature, history, language, art, math, and science. Students read the great works of Western literature and philosophy. Classical languages (Latin) help students understand and think with greater depth about the world around them. Formal logic and rhetoric help students become great leaders and communicators. Classical teaching methods range from class lectures, to debates, to Socratic (discussion-oriented) teaching. Independent learning skills are sharpened at all grade levels.

The Mission

The mission of Covenant Classical School is to provide an education of excellence, biblically based and classically taught, that will lead students to know and love God, develop strong minds and character, and arise as leaders and agents of cultural change. Covenant Classical School is an independent, co-educational day school dedicated to providing a Christian and classical liberal arts education to boys and girls in kindergarten through twelfth grade.
The late David and Ann Drye, local residents and business owners, dreamed of a learning environment for their own children as well as children in Cabarrus County and its surrounding region that utilized the classical trivium method of teaching in a non-denominational Christian setting. The Drye’s began the school in 1996 with grades six through twelve, and quickly expanded it in 1998 to include grammar school classes as well. In 1999, Mr. and Mrs. Drye donated the sixteen acres and the million dollar facility which houses Covenant Classical School today. Before installing the dry wall of our current building, Mr. Drye invited CCS students and families to come in to write scripture on all of the studs throughout the building. Dedicated families have ensured the school’s continued success through tuition, donations, and fundraising. Today, we are enjoying the fruit of their labor, and we thank God for the sacrifice they made to make Covenant Classical School possible.

Founded

Founded in 1996 in Concord, North Carolina, Covenant Classical School met the desire of many parents to offer their children a style of education proven successful for centuries, and previously unavailable in the region. Simply stated, the means of grammar—to read well, the means of logic—to think well, and the means of rhetoric—to speak or write well, are the goals for our children as they mature developmentally and cognitively in Christ.
